What Is Biological Dentistry?

Patients today are far more conscious about the effects of dentistry on their bodies. As such, biological dentistry is a branch of dentistry that focuses on factoring in your entire body's well-being when providing oral treatments or procedures. From considering the possibility of tooth infection to the potential effects of our dental materials, Dr. Butler and her team take a holistic approach to dentistry. You can rest assured that we'll look at every angle before recommending a course of action.

At the heart of biological dentistry is you. We take the time to listen to your needs to help us better understand which of our services is right for you. Do you have an allergy to fluoride? Are you concerned about radiation exposure during your appointment? Our team genuinely acknowledges your needs and strives to offer services that never compromise your overall health.

Our Biologic-Centered Dental Options

At Biodent, Biologic Holistic Dentistry, we've spent years carefully curating our dental services to factor in every aspect of your well-being. Our use of alternative materials and innovative techniques helps us improve and protect your oral health safely and naturally. When you visit us for the first time, we'll conduct an extensive oral exam that looks at your teeth, gums, and jawbones. To better cater to the health of all our patients, we use low-dose radiation when taking x-rays.

From there, our dentist will work with you to create your personalized treatment plan. We believe you deserve to have the information available to make informed and confident oral health decisions. That's why we encourage you to ask questions about our services, down to the materials we use and the technology we leverage. Our San Juan Capistrano biological dentistry offerings include:

  • Ceramic Dental Implants: Dental implants are one of the most popular tooth replacement options available. A dental implant is composed of an implant post, an abutment, and a restoration. However, titanium is the most widely used material to craft implant posts, which can trigger allergic reactions in some patients. We use ceramic implant posts as a more health-conscious way to replace your teeth from root to crown. Using ceramic gives you many of the same benefits as titanium while lowering the chance of allergic reactions and inflammatory responses.
  • CEREC Crowns, Inlays & Onlays: CEREC, or chairside economical restorations of esthetic ceramics, is a unique technology that allows you to get quality restorations in a single visit. Using CEREC technology, we can craft crowns, inlays, and onlays. All three options give you quality metal-free restorations, ideal for patients with metal allergies or aversions.
  • Mercury Removal: Although it's fallen out of favor with many dental practices, dentists used to provide amalgam fillings as a primary restorative option for their patients. However, amalgam fillings are composed of various metals, including mercury, which can be dangerous in vapor form. It's important to note that mercury vapor can be released when you chew, brush, or clench your teeth. Our office is certified to use safe mercury amalgam removal technique, or SMART, to protect you and our staff from mercury when performing mercury removal. SMART includes everything from using a barrier around the treatment area to leveraging filtration and ventilation to remove vapors from the air.
  • Ozone Therapy: Ozone gas purifies drinking water and destroys microbes like bacteria and viruses. Our office is proud to offer ozone therapy, which is the process of administering ozone gas to help prevent infection without using harmful chemicals. Whether you need a tooth filling or a high-quality crown, we'll use ozone therapy to ensure bacteria aren't trapped and increase soft tissue circulation.
  • Platelet-Rich Fibrin: Our dental team understands the importance of natural solutions during complex dental procedures. One of the tools Dr. Butler uses is platelet-rich fibrin or PRF. Platelet-rich fibrin is made using a blood sample, ensuring the material is biocompatible and free from animal products. The blood sample creates a thin membrane-like material we'll place over surgical sites to stimulate bone and soft tissue growth. PRF can be especially crucial during procedures like bone and tissue grafting. We'll take the time to discuss whether PRF is suitable for you and your dental needs.
